With World Diabetes Day approaching, it seemed fitting to pause and celebrate a success story from our Diabetes Program.
Norma, pictured below, is a 46yo recent graduate of our Diabetes Program. When she entered the program her hemoglobin A1C was ">15" (i.e. her estimated average glucose was nearly 400!).
At Norma's last visit her HgbA1C had improved to 5.9%. Her level had gone from beyond the upper limit of our lab analyzer to nearly normal (and well below the ADA's recommended goal A1C of 7%) in the span of six short months.
A1C from ">15" down to 5.9(!!)
This success did not require any heroic efforts on our part. We provided her with monthly clinic visits which included education provided by our certified Diabetic Educator, basic laboratory studies, and run-of-the-mill medications such as metformin.
However, despite not requiring a massive investment of resources or time, Norma's euglycemia markedly reduces her current and future risk for multiple health calamities.
Your ongoing support is making a difference in the lives of our patients in rural Guatemala.
Thank you!
